Take a Virtual Tour of a Model of the New School on YouTube

The new school building is now progressing quite rapidly.  Below you will find some recent pictures of the site, as well as detailed plans for the eventual buildings.  These includes include a slideshow of pictures of what the school will eventually look like, as shown in a presentation by the architects, The Genesis Design Studio, at the New School meeting on 17th May 2010.

The highlight of this presentation was a brilliant six minute animated video simulation of what might be seen on a walk round the new School buildings. Now this video is available as the 'St Peter's CE VA School Devizes CAD Model' on YouTube. To go directly to the page -

Design Document and Plans

The following documents from Wiltshire Council planners are all PDF files and will require Adobe Acrobat Reader to view them.  Your computer might well have this installed already, if not a free download  can be obtained by clicking here - .

Hint: The originals of the drawings below were on very large pieces of paper.  Using the zoom facility on the Adobe menu bar to reduce the view to 25% should provide an overview of the whole page on the screen.  You can than zoom in further, and use the horizontal and vertical scroll bars to focus on a particular area of interest.

Modified plans were submitted for the first phase of the building which consist of those parts of the original which are required for the initial intake.
The other parts of the original plan will be added as numbers expand up towards the maximum capacity of 315 pupils. Also a tree planting scheme has been designed with a Tree Protection Plan.  Some of the Phase 1 plans have been added below.

Current Stage of Development

- November 2011

These two photographs were taken on 29th November, about four months from the scheduled completion date of the school building.   The picture above  shows the classroom and administration block from the Keepers Road side;  the picture below was taken from just inside the site entrance on the Quakers Road.  The site was a hive of activity, as on previous visits, but now most of this activity is happening inside the buildings.

Meanwhile much detailed planning for the school's opening is being done, and it so happened that inside the Portakabins near the site entrance Miss Davis was in a meeting with officials.

September 2011

The most obvious change from July 2011  is that the roofs are on - see picture left above.   So we can now start looking inside the shells of the buildings.

Looking at the centre picture  we can see the recently added steel girder which was built to the architects' specification to form the basis of the first floor balcony on the classroom block.

The view in the right had picture is of the inside of the school hall; the frame for the rose window can be seen in the distance.

- July 2011

On a cloudy July 19th the site was a hive of activity.

The walls of the building at the front of of the site - the administration block and school hall - can be seen on the left, although at the top  of the school hall there are still only girders showing.

Similarly, looking at the classroom blocks from the left side of the site the walls have reached up to first floor level in the picture on the right.

The observant viewer might now be able to match the shape of the buildings in the YouTube video of the architect's virtual tour of how the completed site will look (see top of this page) with the walls that are now emerging.

- May 2011

Now that main services have been laid,  signs of the new building are  beginning to appear above ground.  The shape of the new school hall  can be seen in the girder frame - pictured right.  The inner walls of the new administration block can be seen on the left - the window frame on the left will  eventually be for Miss Davis's office.  The cylinder to the right of this block will be part of the eco-friendly heating and ventilation system.

- January 2011

After delays of over six months, first with extra measures to deal with surface water drainage, and then a long legal wrangle over ownership of land, builders began working on our new school on 24th January.

Under the direction of the site manager Mr David Allen. the site offices were being erected (pictured left) and contractors were working on fence posts for the front of the site where a car park for building workers will be located (pictured right). Work will next proceed with the digging of the foundations, laying of drainage and other services. The total building time for the school will be 12 months, making the completion date of February next year with a possible date for the move to the new school of next Easter.

- May 2010

Very little difference to be seen on this picture taken on 21st May 2010 from the one below taken three months earlier, but looking down towards the end of the school site on the far right some evidence can be seen of the work done by the two housing developers - Wimpey and Persimmon - on the housing site.  Great progress has been made on constructing the roads into the development.  The site is a hive of activity with some houses nearing completion, but the site manager estimates that the developers will be working there for about two years.

Significant progress has now been made on the design and planning of the School.  Revised plans were submitted for the first phase of the building for the initial intake.  This is not a downsizing of the original plans, but rather a building of some of the modules in the design - the other components of the plan will be added later.   The plans were approved by Wiltshire Council on 18th May.  The plan will now go out to tender.  It is hoped that building will start in July 2010 and that the School will be ready to occupy in August 2011 in time for a start in September 2011.

- February 2010

This picture of the site for our new school  was taken on 20th February 2010.  A temporary fence has been built round the whole development but so far no other building work has been done.

The muddiness of the land can be seen in the foreground.  One concern expressed by Wiltshire Council's Technical Manager is the amount of surface water on this former greenfield site.  Preliminary work on the development involves constructing a storm drain which has gone across the London Road, and will eventually feed into the Kennet and Avon Canal.  This construction caused some traffic hold ups on the Road,  and it is now causing disruption to residents of the Moonrakers estate on the other side of the road, where it will go under their roads and footpaths.

Work is continuing on the entry to the site from the London Road, but roads have not yet reached as far as the building sites.
